How To Avoid Flawed Decision Making At Work

We will explore cognitive biases that cause bright people to make wrong (and sometimes silly) decisions, even when faced with all the relevant facts. This is an interactive session focussing on the application of behavioural economics to the business environment, and in particular start-ups. Your own irrational behaviour will be demonstrated through an interactive Q&A session, followed by an explanation of the underlying theory and practical application of techniques for avoiding biases - and even how to use them to your advantage.

Key Learning Objectives

Attendees will learn how to spot biases in others, and various tips on how to maximise their own potential as a result. They will also learn where they are themselves susceptible to bias, and how this could adversely affect their own decision-making. This includes the potential impact on negotiation, market research, disaster aversion and credibility. They will also learn to question assumed causation where this is at best only a correlation.

Scaling Your Startup

Raising funding is a big part of building a successful, scalable business. But it can be complex. Where do you find capital? What’s the best type of investment model for your startup? How do you cover the investment legally? How do you put a founder’s agreement in place? When should you consider IP protection of your idea?

SPARK Deakin and The Venture Law Clinic have assembled a panel of experts who will talk about these topics and other legal issues you need to consider when scaling your startup. We’ll also take a look at the rise of Chinese investment in the startup scene and what this means for Australian entrepreneurs.

Impact Investing and Female Founders

  • Deakin Burwood Corporate Centre (BCC) (map)

Women consumers represent 20 trillion in annual consumer spending and direct 80% of consumer decisions worldwide. However, less than 5% of venture investors are female in Silicon Valley. A surprisingly large number of the most successful tech startups have no women in their Boards, and female founders have documented experiencing a harder time raising funding than their male counterparts.

Rebeca Hwang is a serial entrepreneur who begun her career as an inventor, and then spend a decade founding tech startups and building entrepreneurial ecosystems around the world. During this talk, Ms. Hwang will provide her perspective on how this huge underserved market of female consumers can be untapped, and the unique position of women to be protagonists in designing products, founding startups, investing in and growing companies that serve the needs of women with scalable technology solutions. She will discuss where Silicon Valley is failing today and the opportunity that this opens to Australian entrepreneurs.

She will also share her challenges and triumphs in business over 15 years as a social entrepreneur, tech founder, venture investor and educator, and encourage more women to get involved in founding, building, and investing in companies that serve the needs of women around the world.

PANEL DISCUSSION

The panel will include Shanthakumar Bannirchelvam, Managing Director at Global Strategy Partners and entrepreneur Juleigh Robins who is behind Outback Spirit.

Shanthakumar has advised companies in the renewable energy, clean technology, healthcare, and agricultural sectors on strategy and capital raising for the Australia and international markets spanning sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa and Asia.

Juleigh’s vision is to bring Indigenous foods into the mainstream food market and the company is the industry leader supplying the Outback Spirit branded range of products to supermarkets nationally in Australia.

Registrations Essential.

Photos may be taken at this event and a full recording will be available on the SPARK Youtube Channel.
