Have you always wanted to start a business but didn’t know how to begin? This is the opportunity that you’ve been waiting for.

We’ll help you find your feet in the world of entrepreneurship, equipping you with the skills for startup methodology to design thinking, developing a business model and pitching ideas.

Not only will you learn a lot, but you’ll also have a ton of fun, meet new people and maybe even win some awesome prizes.

If you don’t have an idea, don’t stress! Curiosity and an interest in problem solving means you’re well suited for the Hackathon.

You’ll be surrounded by like-minded, entrepreneurial thinkers who are committed to challenging themselves to think about the startup space in new and exciting ways. 

Here’s a taste of what you’ll learn over the weekend:

  • Conducting customer interviews to identify problems

  • Understanding who they are with user personas

  • Planning your startup using the lean canvas

  • Moving fast with agile project management

  • Improving quickly using test cards and assumption validation

  • Finding and converting your first customers


What you need to know to get started


Who can apply?

Deakin students, staff and alumni are welcome to apply. You may be looking to start a new business, grow an existing one, or still be studying.

When and where is the event?

The Startup Weekend takes place at both Deakin University's Burwood and Geelong Campus each year. Sign up for our mailing list to be notified for dates in 2019.

What is the cost?

The weekend costs $35 (Deakin students) amd $50 (Deakin staff and alumni) + plus booking fee. If you are a member of the public, the weekend costs $300. Catering and beverages are provided however travel and accommodation are not included.

What is the application process?

A simple application process will determine who will be selected. You should be a pro-active, passionate and innovative change-maker who is willing to learn.
